wow nice lines there bud, I hope nobody in the comments section knows how to translate them and destroys all of the suspense about your true name

jokes aside, a minor deviation from the original chapter 1 is what alphabet rune writes in for this bit, since the one I used last time was technically wrong

I don't know much about japanese, but google says that writing is in katakana. If Rune's name is what I think it is, it's super pretty!

also I like how excited Malachi is about doing charades. An adorable dork he is

Very interesting choice of her name + use of katakana for her sharing the name...! Assuming that the combination of these two choices on your part means the heritage it implies, it results in a pretty clever choice in-universe too, with how she chooses to convey her name specifically with a kana character set for most clear pronunciation! Even if ultimately, it doesn't work on Malachi there. (while i haven't seen your original chapter 1, it sounds like you used hiragana originally?)

Would I be incorrect in assuming that her true name suspense, you're planning to keep by, for those who do read/decode the katakana, keeping her name's kanji (and thus further symbolic-meaning?) for the reveal?

Either way, a thoughtful and interesting use of Japanese, i feel! (I'm half so you'd better believe she/your decision interests and resonates with me)

This does give me a dilemma regarding referring to your character though, since the way things are going "Rune" might not be a name she actually agrees with or wants? But obviously your author's comment you'd prefer that I not use her actual name, but it's ok if you don't answer; it's so yeah if my future comments ( heck probably already this one) sound weird in wording that would be why.

This is a pretty in-depth analysis that I appreciate! More answers will come with time as the comic goes on, but I can answers a few things currently!

You're pretty spot-on for why she chose the kana set she did! You're also right in that I originally used hiragana, but when I more carefully considered her heritage and name origin, switched it to katakana. From a meta reading standpoint, it also makes it easier for readers to translate if they want to pursue it vs trying to file through thousands of kanji characters to try figuring out her name :,) The actual kanji of her name will likely show up in the story later as we uncover her past.

And yeah I've been nervous about portraying the name thing properly for a while (the original version of the comic was made all the way back in 2014, so I've had to patch up a lot of ideas I was uninformed on), so I'm glad to hear that some things seem to be lining up alright! Malachi technically gives her the name "Rune" later, but some past readers have gone ahead and referred to her by that name in the comments (though I've had some folks who refer to her just by her actual name, which is also fine! My author comment is just meant to tease, I genuinely don't mind if others translate the name for accessibility purposes).

Her own attachment to her true name is a bit complicated, and ultimately whether or not she'll want to tell Malachi something with a great feeling of private value to her is something she'll have to think about later on once she has the means to communicate with him. He's not exactly emotionally attuned to others' needs, so it'll take her some time to open up to him about it (especially considering he seemed to dismiss her attempts at expressing it in the first place, as well-meaning as he tries to be).

That's a lot of words! With all that said though, I have had some personal dilemmas about using the name Rune for her after learning about the derogatory implications surrounding terms like "moonrunes". I originally gave her the name Rune with the intent that all human language in this world was considered archaic and impossible to decipher (including romanized languages), though unfortunately it carries the real-world implications of Eastern languages looking strange or out of place compared to romanized languages, which was not my intention. Balancing character motivations and consideration of real-world implications is something I've been working on, but feedback like this is really helpful in finding that balance!

Ahh, thank you for shedding light both on clarification for referring to her in comments + your thoughts going into the writing decisions! I definitely believe you when you say how learning a lot since the first inception of the story's meant putting in the work balancing/re-balancing things; and I'm excited to see where this goes, as it all (your insights + what I've seen in the comic itself thus far) shows you're putting a lot of heart & thoughtfulness into it!!
